Rheumatology + Podcast + Clinical Practice Guidelines

What’s even more exciting than a question bank? A podcast! My thoughtful colleague, Dr.

Feterman Jimenez (RheumforChange) suggested this idea a few weeks ago. She was the one to introduce me to NotebookLM and the one ultimately responsible for my newfound love of AI! NotebookLM can create NPR-style podcasts based on the documents you give it so limited hallucinations and polished podcasts are prepared in record time.

I focused on the clinical practice guidelines because these are crucial for fellows to know. However, they are often dry and it’s not always spelled out or clear what is a change and what is critical. Having a podcast is a fantastic way to learn during a long car ride or other downtime periods. Additionally, many people learn in different ways so it’s best to have a combination of learning tools.

For NotebookLMs podcast, you decide how many and which documents they should base the podcast off of and you have a few choices, shown below:

I started off with the lupus nephritis guidelines for a few reasons. One reason is that they are brand new and significantly different from prior guidelines. The next reason is that the guidelines are incredibly testable. There are few certainties in rheumatology and we are so lucky to have so many guidelines now. These guidelines are very likely to appear on the rheumatology board exam.

The main drawback for me is the difficulty in getting the AI hosts to pronounce the medications correctly. Admittedly there are some meds in rheumatology that no one knows how to pronounce correctly but they do pronounce belimumab and voclosporine incorrectly and refer to class V lupus nephritis as “vee” rather than “five”. That being said, overall they do a great job and it’s entertaining to listen to rheumatology guidelines in this format. I haven’t detected any other inaccuracies or large omissions.

I have links in the Rheumify app and I am hosting the episodes on SoundCloud. I have finished with lupus nephritis and am working on the ILD guidelines as well. Happy listening!
